Two important acronyms are often confused in hair restoration: ISHRS and ABHRS. Both are respected, but they represent different things.
ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery)
An international professional society with over 1,200 members worldwide, focused on education, research, and ethical standards. Membership signals professional engagement to a degree but is not, by itself, a board certification.
ABHRS (American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery)
A genuine specialty board certification awarded to physicians who pass a much more rigorous exam and evaluation process. Only around 270 surgeons worldwide hold this "Diplomate" credential — a small fraction of ISHRS's membership.
Why the Difference Matters
If a clinic vaguely claims to be "board certified" without specifying which board, or gives evasive answers when ABHRS is mentioned specifically, that's a red flag.
