While a single session is sufficient for most patients, certain situations call for planning multiple sessions โ€” which can produce both safer and more successful results.

When Multiple Sessions Are Needed

  • Very advanced hair loss (Norwood 6-7): When the graft need exceeds what can be safely extracted in one session.
  • Limited donor area with a high target density: Extracting gradually over time without damaging the donor area lets it heal and potentially supply more grafts later.
  • Additional density desired after a prior transplant: The need is assessed only after the first session's results have fully matured (12+ months).

Time Between Sessions

As a general rule, waiting at least 8-12 months before a second session is recommended, allowing the donor area to fully heal and the first session's results to become clear.

The Advantage

A staged approach lets the surgeon see the outcome of the first session and fine-tune the second accordingly โ€” particularly valuable in cases requiring careful design refinement.

Caution: Pushing the donor area beyond safe limits under a promise of "we'll handle everything in one session" can lead to permanent donor-area thinning down the line.
