Curly and Afro-textured hair has a fundamentally different follicular structure than straight hair, making transplantation technically far more challenging.

The Structural Difference

Unlike straight hair follicles, Afro-textured follicles grow beneath the skin in a C-shaped or spiral (helical) configuration. This curved structure raises the risk of follicular transection when standard extraction tools are used.

Transection Risk

With conventional methods designed for straight hair, transection rates can reach up to 80%. This is why specialized curved punches, larger-diameter instruments, and modified extraction protocols are necessary.

There's an Advantage Too

The curl itself creates a greater sense of visual density (coverage) for the same graft count โ€” a genuine advantage for patients with Afro-textured hair.

Critical selection criterion: A surgeon working with this hair type must have documented experience specifically with Afro/curly hair โ€” general experience alone isn't enough.
