Good pre-op preparation directly affects both surgical safety and graft survival rate.
2-4 Weeks Before
- Blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements (garlic, ginkgo) should be stopped with physician approval.
- Smoking should be stopped or minimized — nicotine reduces blood flow and can impair wound healing and graft viability.
- Avoid hair or scalp dyeing/chemical treatments.
Final Week
- Alcohol consumption should stop.
- Follow any antibiotic/steroid protocol the surgeon prescribes.
- If a haircut is required (FUE/Sapphire FUE usually requires shaving the donor area), follow the clinic's instructions.
Procedure Day
- Wear loose, front-buttoning/zippered clothing (garments pulled over the head can damage fresh grafts).
- Eat a light breakfast and limit caffeine.
- Arrange a companion for the trip home if sedation will be used.
Key point: Share every medication and supplement with the surgeon — some should only be stopped under medical supervision.
