The ARTAS system is a robotic platform that uses digital imaging and AI algorithms to extract follicular units. It scans the scalp with a high-resolution (44-micron) stereoscopic vision system, analyzing 60 times per second to select optimal follicular units.

How It Works

It uses double-punch technology: an inner sharp punch scores the skin while a rotating outer dull punch separates the follicular unit from surrounding tissue โ€” performed with consistent precision, without a scalpel, sutures, or staples.

Advantages

  • Because the system doesn't fatigue, consistency is maintained even in long sessions.

Limitations

  • The system's high cost means it's not available at every clinic, and the procedure is generally more expensive.
  • Success at recognizing and extracting follicles can be more variable with very curly/Afro-textured hair.
  • The robot only handles extraction (and, in some models, channel-opening) โ€” graft placement still requires a human hand.
