Proper washing reduces scab formation, supporting both graft health and the pace of visible healing.
First Professional Wash
Usually performed at the clinic 24-72 hours after the procedure, using a special foam/lotion at low pressure. This sets the technique to follow at home.
At-Home Washing Technique (roughly the first 2 weeks)
- Shampoo is never applied directly โ it's foamed in the palm first, then gently applied to the scalp.
- No rubbing or fingernail contact โ only light tapping with fingertips.
- Water pressure is kept low; direct forceful spray should never hit the graft area.
- Dry by gentle patting or air-drying, never by rubbing with a towel.
After Week 2
Once scabs have fully shed, a gradual return to normal washing routine is possible, though aggressive brushing and harsh products should still be avoided for a while.
Why preventing scabs matters: Regular, proper moisturizing and washing keeps scabs from thickening and adhering to grafts โ reducing the risk of graft loss.
