Temporary numbness or altered sensation in both the donor and recipient areas is fairly common after the procedure, generally caused by small nerve endings being temporarily affected by surgical trauma.
Typical Course
Numbness is usually noticed within a few days of the procedure and gradually diminishes over weeks to months. Full sensation returns within 3-6 months in most cases.
Permanent Sensory Loss
Rare but not impossible — particularly with deep or repeated surgical intervention (e.g., multiple FUT operations), nerve damage risk can increase. Permanent cases are typically limited to small, localized areas and don't meaningfully affect daily life.
When to see a doctor: If numbness persists beyond 6 months, or is accompanied by pain or a burning sensation, follow up with the surgeon for evaluation.
